choco-gels

So I googled Choco-Gels, and guess what? My blog is the only thing that Google found. Do you guys know what Choco-Gels are? They were a childhood favorite of mine, although I've eaten one (who am I kidding? I've probably never eaten just one) as recently as a few years ago. They are made by Little Debbie and are round, chocolate pies with white creme with a cherry glaze in the middle.

I went to the Little Debbie website to learn what happened to my beloved Choco-Gels. No fear, they have only been renamed with a very boring albeit fitting name: Jelly Creme Pies.

So what is your favorite kind of Little Debbie? I loved Star Crunches when I was about 5, but as I got older my taste matured and I preferred Nutty Butty Bars. I also liked the Swiss Cake Rolls because I liked to peel the chocolate exterior layer off and eat it bit by bit. Here's the top ten selling Little Debbies:

1. Swiss Cake Rolls
2. Nutty Bars® Wafer Bars
3. Oatmeal Creme Pies
4. Fudge Brownies
5. Honey Buns
6. Zebra Cakes (I find nothing redeeming about these except the cute name.)
7. Devil Squares® (These don't even have the cute name to help them out. Yuck.)
8. Fudge Rounds
9. Star Crunch® Cosmic Snacks
10. Chocolate Cupcakes

On a somewhat related note and not surpisingly, I really stink at eating healthy. In my effort to quit spending $10 a day on lunch (and so much money in general), I went to the Soup Kitchen today. My friend Ivy was kind enough to join me, and he confirmed my identification of Mr. Regular as someone in his mid-40s. Anyway, the Soup Kitchen is so much cheaper than a salad anywhere else, but the bottom line is that I'll grab on to any excuse to eat whatever I want; I can't lie. I keep on hoping that one day I'll wake up and be a mature, responsible adult and want to eat vegetables and fruit and go to bed at 10:30. I guess until then I'll vacillate between just doing what I want and trying to be somewhat disciplined.

It was a question of money that helped lead me to better eating habits. When I actually paid attention to my MasterCard one day and discovered I was easily spending $200 a month on just lunch, it was time to stop. I eat the same breakfast every morning (at work anyway) and always get up early enough to put something together for lunch. I usually cook dinner at the house and rarely ever eat out but perhaps once (if that) a week.

Of course, a four-digit mortgage payment helps persuade me from eating out too often as well. :)

You are wrong about Zebra cakes... they're tasiter than Petit Fors and Party Favors icing combined...

I was once ordered...ORDERED!!!... by my doctor to eat more ice cream. You only have to tell me that once.

Swiss Cake Rolls . . . a major food group of my childhood. Yummy!

I thought I'd be more grown up by this age. However, as I sit here in front of the computer, in the middle of the day, in jeans and an old sweatshirt, chatting with my dog and enjoying a big frothy milkshake, I realize that not much has changed. I still fail in every grown-up category there is.

Last night I kept my first-grader up until an ungodly hour decorating a paper turkey (the first-grade hallway is to be adorned with a turkey from each student this week, decorated as a "family project"), and after he went to bed I stayed up another two hours embellishing the turkey, per his careful instructions, with markers, glitter, and glue. I suppose parenting is a pretty grown-up thing to do. And it's so much fun! :-)

Jordan: Sorry...today, thanks to the monthly birthday bash in our breakroom, has been full of sugar (cinnamon rolls, iced cookies, and petit fours comprised 85% of the calories I consumed), so follow my example and go have all of your favorite Little Debbies! They have strawberry swiss cakes?

Cindy: The turkey sounds adorable! I remember staying up late with my mom (and I wonder why I'm such a procrastinator:) working on school projects. Fun times.

AM: Those are my kind of doctor's orders.

Donatello: That's pure blasphemy. Zebra Cakes don't even belong in the same sentences as such delicacies as Party Favor's cupcake icing and Donut Castle's petit fours.

Ivy: That's the good thing about Little Debbies....they are only 99 cents for a box; so yes, I'll pick you up some.

FC&F: It won't be long before they offer "fortified" Little Debbies complete with all of our daily vitamins.

Aaron: Almost every morning I eat the same thing too--oatmeal, which I love. I'm sure a mortgage payment would help shock me into financial responsiblity, but right now it seems like it's worth $200 to eat lunch out every day. Of course when I combine that with what I spend on eating dinner out too, that's a lot of money. I'm working on it though and slowly being more conscious of my spending and how excessive it is, even if I can "afford" it (since I have a three digit rent payment:)
